About Svalbard
Svalbard is the highest-latitude inhabited place on Earth accessible by commercial flights, sitting at 78°N in the core of the geomagnetic auroral zone. The archipelago experiences the polar night from mid-November to late January, offering absolute darkness for aurora viewing, then flips into 24-hour daylight from late April to late August. This is not just a northern lights trip — it's one of the great Arctic wilderness experiences. Polar bear sightings are possible on guided boat or expedition routes, glaciers calve into the sea, and reindeer wander Longyearbyen's streets. Snowmobile expeditions dominate spring, while June through August shifts toward boat trips, kayaking, hiking and small-ship cruising under the midnight sun. Accommodation quality in Longyearbyen has dramatically improved — the town punches above its weight for dining and hotels — but summer inventory books quickly around cruise departures. For aurora, choose October to March; for wildlife, open water and continuous daylight, choose June to August.

Getting There
Direct flights from Oslo (about 3h) and Tromsø (about 1.5h) serve Longyearbyen Airport year-round, with summer departures often tied to expedition cruise schedules. Most international travellers connect via Oslo, while Tromsø is the easiest add-on from mainland Arctic Norway. No visa is required for many nationalities under the Svalbard Treaty, but you still transit the Schengen area to reach Svalbard, so check mainland Norway entry rules before booking. Summer visitors should also reserve boat trips and airport transfers early because capacity is limited.
Cost Breakdown
Svalbard (Spitsbergen) is Norway's most expensive Arctic region. Most goods are imported and highly taxed.
