About Ísafjörður
Ísafjörður is the capital of Iceland's Westfjords, a region that feels dramatically wilder and quieter than the country's more famous south coast. Built on a narrow spit in Skutulsfjörður, the town has one of Iceland's prettiest historic centres and acts as the natural base for fjord drives, sea kayaking, hiking, and summer boat trips to Hornstrandir. Its far-north latitude brings luminous summer nights and a long aurora season in winter, while the surrounding mountains and water create constantly changing light for photographers. This is not the easiest Iceland destination, which is exactly why it is so appealing. Travellers who make it here get solitude, strong local character, and a version of Iceland that still feels slightly undiscovered. For June-August trips, reserve Hornstrandir boat seats and rental cars early, and pack waterproof layers: the Westfjords can deliver bright near-midnight light, fog, rain and strong wind in the same travel day.

Getting There
Fly from Reykjavik Domestic Airport to Ísafjörður in about 40 minutes for the easiest year-round access. In summer, the Westfjords can also be combined with a self-drive route from Reykjavik via the ring road or ferry connections, but distances are longer than they look and gravel or mountain roads can make progress slow.
Cost Breakdown
Iceland is one of Europe's most expensive destinations. Self-drive rental is a common transport choice.
