This is a very special restaurant. I 💯 recommend booking a table. This is a 4 to 5 course set 'tasting menu' featuring seasonal Norwegian and Svalbard style cuisine with a twist to suite the season. The food is genuinely excuisite and worthy of Michelin recognition! I can only thank the staff, chefs and Daniela for a truly magical evening. *****

Gorgeous location and decor in this thoughtfully restored coal mining depot. The lights are amazing. Food delicious. Service friendly and professional. Don't miss if you're in Svalbard. Best dinner of the trip by far.

Turns out my favourite restaurant is only 3 long plane rides away! Starting with first impressions, the decor and atmosphere are perfect. From its past as a dilapidated old mining equipment shed, it's been transformed using the original wood and metal into a beautiful dining room that's both rustic and elegant. It has warmth (literally and figuratively) with an open fireplace along with a sense of history that made the meal feel really special. Even with such an extraordinary (yet welcoming!) atmosphere, the food was the real star (well maybe split with the wine selections, but more on that in a minute). I savoured every bite from the amuse bouche to the dessert. The ingredients were locally sourced (where possible) and each dish showed both creativity and respect for tradition (like the house-made potato chips in the superb beef tartare). As for the wine pairing: it's an absolute must. Their selection shows truly exceptional taste. I had to come to the top of the world to experience the best wine pairing ever. The Barbera Emilia IGT served with the duck breast main was the best wine I've ever had, and the fortified white served with the dessert was not only Vatican-approved, it was heavenly! And I can't say enough about the service. The staff went above and beyond: not only warm and attentive, but also deeply knowledgeable about the food and wine and the rich history of the place. They made the whole experience feel personal and unforgettable. Between the historic setting, the flawless execution, and truly outstanding wines, Gruvelageret delivered one of the most memorable, magical dining experiences of my life. It's a destination worth travelling for... in a destination worth travelling for. I can't wait to come back.
