Svalbard was a bucket list place to go. We visited Longyearbyen and thoroughly enjoyed it. Polar bears rarely venture into town apparently, although a few years ago, the campground manager was killed. Anyone venturing outside of town at all, are required to be armed. They rent and sell firearms. Rifles and handguns. Although we were about 1,300 kilometers (approximately 800 miles) north of the Arctic Circle, the full service grocery was fully stocked with fresh produce and fresh bakery goods. And, the best prices on souvenir tee shirts in town. We were their during the 100 year anniversary of Svalbard. There was a wonderful celebration at the community center, attended by the Prown Prince and Prime Minister of Norway. We sat 3 rows behind them. English is the primary language used in Svalvard, as a result if the large number of nations people who live here are from. Approximately ⅓ of the population of Longyearbyen are non Norwegians. Svalbard is the only place worldwide that permits immigration and visits without a visa or passport. Longyearbyen is truly a global town.

Tour in the area next to the city, close to the sea. The river was already frozen and the area was snowy. It was beautiful and interesting.
