Can You See the Northern Lights in December? Deep-Winter Aurora Guide
December is one of the darkest and most atmospheric northern lights months, but it is not automatically the easiest. Use it for long nights, snow and winter activities, while planning carefully around holiday demand, cloud and extreme cold.

About Abisko
Abisko in Swedish Lapland remains one of the world's most reliable aurora viewing locations — and the science backs this up. A unique microclimate, shaped by Lake Torneträsk and surrounding mountains, often creates a clearer 'blue hole' above the valley while nearby areas sit under cloud. The Aurora Sky Station, reached by chairlift to 900m, is the headline experience, but travellers can also watch from STF Abisko Turiststation, the lake shore and dark pull-outs along the E10. Winter is the classic aurora season, but September and October are underrated for photographers: the lake may still be unfrozen, autumn colour adds foreground interest, and nights are already dark enough for displays. Abisko is small, so reserve lodging and Sky Station tickets early for December to March trips.

Getting There
Train from Narvik (about 1h) or Kiruna (about 1.5-2h) on the scenic Ofoten/Iron Ore Line. Fly to Kiruna or Evenes/Narvik, then continue by train or rental car. Self-drive from Kiruna takes around 90 minutes on the E10; in winter, check road conditions and avoid late-night arrivals during heavy snow or wind.
Cost Breakdown
Prices reflect winter high season. Abisko is slightly cheaper than coastal Norway, but the tiny accommodation supply means good-value rooms sell out quickly for aurora season.
