Reindeer Island Hammerfest

An excellent experience delving into the lives of the Indigenous people of Norway. We got to visit the gammen's of farmer Mikkel and his family. He chanted several joik to us in the older structure and in a newer gammen, his wife fed us three types of reindeer (smoked, cooked, salted and dry aged), flat bread, and smoked salmon along with a small helping of cloudberries ( a true delicacy). Outside his son told us of reindeer farming and how it is allowed in Norway. His son is one of three local farmers and he owns 300 head of reindeer. Static displays showed up how the Sami used to hunt, capture, and sure the skins of the reindeer. We also got to hand feed some tame reindeer inside one of the farms pens. For anyone who likes to get out as have a chance at learning about local cultures, this excursion is a must see.

We had a fantastic visit to a Sami camp in Hammerfest. The tour was very well organised, informative, and moved at a relaxed, enjoyable pace. It was fascinating to learn more about Sami history and their way of life, and the setting added to the authenticity of the experience. The Sami people were incredibly welcoming and generous with their time and knowledge, sharing not only their traditions but also a variety of cultural elements during our visit. It felt personal and enriching, not just like a standard tourist stop. Highly recommended for anyone visiting the area who wants a deeper understanding of this unique culture.
