Can You See the Northern Lights in June? Honest Arctic Summer Guide
Short answer: not in the Arctic. June is midnight sun season, so northern lights trips should shift to late August onward or pivot to midnight sun and southern lights alternatives.

About Stewart Island
Stewart Island / Rakiura is New Zealand's third-largest island, just 30km south of the South Island across Foveaux Strait, and one of the country's best destinations for Aurora Australis viewing. At 46.9°S, the island is further south than Queenstown, with darker skies and lower light pollution — Halfmoon Bay (Oban), the only settlement, has just 400 residents. The Southern Lights are most realistic on clear nights between May and September, usually appearing as a green or pink glow across the southern horizon during moderate to strong geomagnetic activity. The island is 85% national park and contains one of New Zealand's most important kiwi populations, so aurora hunting pairs naturally with nocturnal wildlife walks, Ulva Island birding and coastal hikes. Stay at least three nights if the aurora matters: weather changes quickly, ferry crossings can be affected by Foveaux Strait conditions, and the best viewing spots require both clear sky and a clean southern horizon.

Getting There
Ferry from Bluff (1h, Stewart Island Experience) or small plane from Invercargill (20min, Stewart Island Flights). Drive or shuttle to Bluff from Invercargill (30min). Invercargill Airport (IVC) has regular domestic connections via Christchurch and Wellington; book the ferry early for winter weekends and allow buffer time for weather-related delays.
Cost Breakdown
Remote-island pricing: groceries, fuel and tours cost more than on the mainland. May-September is quieter than summer, but book accommodation ahead because Oban has limited rooms.
