About Tórshavn

Tórshavn is the capital of the Faroe Islands — 18 volcanic islands in the North Atlantic between Iceland and Norway, at 62°N, with sheer sea cliffs, waterfalls dropping toward the ocean and turf-roofed houses that seem to grow from the hillside. The old town of Tinganes, a cluster of red-painted medieval warehouses on a headland, is one of Europe's most atmospheric historic districts. Northern lights are possible here on clear, active nights from October to March, but the Faroes sit on the southern fringe of the auroral zone and the maritime weather is the real challenge. Treat aurora as a bonus rather than the reason to travel. For the best chance, drive away from Tórshavn's lights toward dark north- or east-facing viewpoints, watch cloud breaks obsessively, and plan a trip around landscapes, hiking, food and photography first.

Getting There

Fly to Vágar Airport (FAE) from Copenhagen, Reykjavik, Oslo, Edinburgh and selected seasonal European routes — Atlantic Airways is the main carrier, with SAS on key Scandinavian links. The drive from Vágar to Tórshavn takes around 45 minutes via subsea tunnel. The Smyril Line ferry from Hirtshals, Denmark, is an option for slow travellers and vehicles but takes roughly 36 hours and is weather-dependent.

Small-island premium: much food is imported, rental cars book out in peak periods, and flexible travellers should budget extra for weather-related changes to ferries or tours.
