Lapland Airports: Rovaniemi, Kittilä or Ivalo?

Choose the airport for your Lapland base, then check both flights and the transfer to your accommodation. A practical winter 2026–27 guide to Rovaniemi, Kittilä and Ivalo.

Lapland Airports: Rovaniemi, Kittilä or Ivalo?

Choose Rovaniemi Airport for a Rovaniemi stay, Kittilä for Levi, and Ivalo for Saariselkä. Then compare flights on your actual dates and the transfer to your named accommodation. A lower airfare to a different part of Lapland can mean a much longer onward journey, not a cheaper version of the same trip.

For winter 2026–27, new direct routes make more bases worth checking before you default to Rovaniemi. But a winter route announcement does not mean daily flights, service throughout the season or an airport bus meeting every arrival.

Match the airport to the base

These are gateway choices, not rankings of aurora chances. Choose the place that suits your daytime plans and accommodation; cloud, darkness and geomagnetic activity still determine whether lights are visible.

Rovaniemi Airport: choose it for Rovaniemi, not all of Lapland

Rovaniemi is the straightforward airport to investigate when your stay is built around the city or Santa Claus Village. Finavia lists the Airport Express & Santa’s Express connection to Santa Claus Village and the railway station, with tickets available onboard.

Use Airportbus for the dated service and stops. A local service to Santa Claus Village is not automatically an airport bus. For a late flight, establish the last usable departure and your fallback transfer before paying for a non-refundable room. Do not assume every flight has a matching bus simply because the airport has public transport.

Your hotel address matters as much as the airport. A central hotel, a Santa Claus Village room and an out-of-town glass cabin create different arrival journeys. Our Rovaniemi area guide compares those bases. Once the arrival works, use the three-day Rovaniemi itinerary to plan a short stay.

If your real destination is Levi or Saariselkä, compare Kittilä or Ivalo first rather than treating Rovaniemi as interchangeable. Only choose the longer cross-region journey after finding a workable dated connection in both directions.

Kittilä Airport to Levi: check the hotel stop

For a Levi stay, start by comparing flights into Kittilä. Finavia’s transport page identifies Tunturilinjat for Levi and a separate operator, Rundgren, for Ylläs. Do not use a Levi timetable to plan a Ylläs arrival.

Tunturilinjat’s timetable page lists named Levi hotel and area stops. Its November 2026 instructions distinguish ordinary stops from advance-request arrangements for Rakkavaara and Hotel Panorama. A cabin described as “Levi” may still need a separate pickup from a stop.

The operator says airport schedules and tickets go on sale at the end of the preceding month. On 31 October, the published airport-bus section included 1–30 November 2026; that is not a December–March timetable. If you are booking farther ahead, get a confirmed hotel transfer or wait for the matching monthly bus schedule before treating the last leg as settled.

Arrival-bus departures can move with the aircraft’s landing and baggage delivery, and canceled flights mean canceled bus services. For the return, follow the pickup and reservation instructions for your exact stop, not just the flight departure time.

Ivalo Airport to Saariselkä: use the monthly flight-linked bus

Ivalo is the airport to compare for Saariselkä and Kiilopää. Eskelinen’s airport-transfer page publishes monthly timetables for that route. The operator says no seat reservation is required and tickets are bought from the driver with cash or card.

The bus operates in relation to flights: no flight means no corresponding shuttle. On 31 October 2026, the page linked timetables through November, not a complete December–March calendar. Match your flight and travel month rather than copying an older departure time.

Saariselkä, Kiilopää, Inari village and a remote lodge are not one transfer destination. Finavia lists Inari village separately, with a charter shuttle requiring contact with its operator. For any property away from the advertised stops, obtain the actual pickup arrangement.

Our three-day Saariselkä itinerary helps you build a short fell-resort stay after the airport leg is resolved. You do not need to choose a glass-roof room to use Ivalo as your gateway.

What changed for winter 2026–27?

In its 8 October 2026 announcement, Finavia named new winter connections including Amsterdam, Brussels, Liverpool and London Luton to Kittilä, and Munich to Ivalo. Its figure of 31 new routes covers the whole Finavia network, not Lapland alone. The practical change is a wider set of airport-and-base combinations to compare—not evidence of cheaper fares or easier transfers on every date.

For UK departures, easyJet’s 18 June announcement gives these planned starts:

Announced routeStart in 2026Announced operating days
London Luton–Kittilä24 NovemberTuesday and Saturday
Liverpool–Kittilä25 NovemberWednesday and Saturday
Newcastle–Rovaniemi25 NovemberWednesday and Sunday
These are announced patterns, not a live departure calendar. The announcement does not establish the last operating date for these three routes. Check the airline’s current outbound and return dates before selecting the length of stay; a twice-weekly route may not fit your intended weekend. A flight-only ticket also does not establish an included airport transfer.

For any other departure airport, search the actual airport pair and both dates. Compare a Helsinki connection where relevant, but distinguish a through-ticket from separately booked flights and check baggage and missed-connection terms. A fare-search result can include a connection even when you searched a route marketed as direct.

Compare the complete arrival, not just the fare

Put these costs beside each flight option: baggage, both airport transfers, any extra hotel night and any private pickup needed outside bus hours. Keep the accommodation identical where you can; otherwise you are comparing different holidays.

For a short stay, arriving at the airport linked to your chosen base is usually the first option to investigate. A different gateway can still work, but only with an actual onward route, enough connection time and a return that reaches the airport before check-in closes. Do not budget a cross-Lapland transfer as though it were the local resort shuttle.

Before booking, settle five things:

  • Both flights: exact dates, airports and whether each leg is nonstop.
  • Both transfers: the relevant month’s service, pickup stop and any advance order.
  • The property: its address, last check-in and distance from the actual bus stop.
  • Disruption: who to contact if the flight is late or canceled, and whether a prepaid transfer waits.
  • The return morning: hotel pickup, airport arrival and the airline’s check-in deadline.
Choose the base first, confirm the full arrival chain, then book the room. That keeps Rovaniemi, Levi and Saariselkä as three distinct trip options rather than three airport names in the same fare search.
