About Kemi
Kemi is Finland's gateway to Arctic sea ice experiences on the northern shore of the Gulf of Bothnia. Its two headline attractions are unlike anything else in Finland: the Sampo icebreaker cruise and the SnowCastle. The Sampo, a real 1960s Finnish state icebreaker, takes guests out onto the frozen Gulf of Bothnia for a surreal experience of crashing through sea ice and then floating in dry suits in the Arctic water. The SnowCastle — rebuilt each winter to a different design — is a vast snow and ice construction including a hotel, restaurant, and chapel, operating from January to April. Aurora viewing at 65.7°N is solid if not exceptional — roughly 100–120 auroral nights per year on clear winter evenings. Kemi sits just south of the Arctic Circle making it more accessible temperature-wise than Rovaniemi, and significantly cheaper. The adjacent city of Tornio across the border in Sweden creates a unique twin-city border experience. Well connected by train to Helsinki and Rovaniemi. In early April, Kemi is especially appealing because late-season icebreaker departures often still run while daylight is much longer and temperatures are more manageable for families and first-time Arctic travellers. For 2026 planning, Kemi is best treated as a two-night specialist stop rather than a full Lapland base: arrive by train, do the icebreaker or SnowCastle day, then continue north to Rovaniemi, Levi, or Swedish Lapland for stronger aurora odds.

Getting There
Fly to Kemi-Tornio Airport (KEM) from Helsinki in about 1.5 hours, then take a taxi or pre-booked transfer into town. Kemi is also straightforward by train from Helsinki (around 7 hours overnight or daytime services) and just 1.5 hours by rail from Rovaniemi, making it one of Lapland's easiest car-free destinations. By road it sits on the E8 and works well as a stop on a wider Finnish Lapland route; book icebreaker and SnowCastle activities before arranging a short stay, as departure days can shape the itinerary.
